Special Events

Artist Grants — Durham Arts Council is distributing applications for 2008-2009 Emerging Artists Grants. An information session will take place from 6-7:30pm Aug. 7 at the Chapel Hill Public Library conference room. The deadline for applications is Sept. 15. www.durhamarts.org

Cedar Grove Bluegrass Festival — free festival on Sept. 27. Musical performances and refreshments. Northern Human Services Center (located on Highway 86 North) in Cedar Grove, from noon to 6pm. Open Jazz Jam — second Fridays, bring your instruments to the ArtsCenter and jam with the house band or just bring your ears and dancing shoes. 8pm, $5 cover includes one drink.

Peace Sunday — Hillsborough United Church of Christ at 200 Davis Road will hold a special event Aug. 3 at 11am called Peace Sunday to honor Hiroshima Remembrance Day. The service includes songs and poetry about peace and activities for children.

Volunteer Information Session — Sept. 10 10-11:30am at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools offer information about volunteering to help students.

Guided Tours — of the N.C. Botanical Garden’s Plant Collections, every Saturday at 10am. Free.

Gardening Advice — the Orange County Master Gardeners provide a variety of gardening and landscaping information. Home Garden Clinic at the N.C. Botanical Garden’s Totten Center on Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 2pm. Call in questions at 962-0522 or speak in person. Bring cuttings or photographs of damaged or stressed plants.
