News Brief: Carrboro High energy efficiency

Posted on July 31, 2008 by Staff

Carrboro High School recently earned a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating for sensible energy use, environmental protection and community stewardship.

Carrboro High is the second K-12 school in North Carolina to earn LEED certification. The school has a number of sustainable features, including three 35,000-gallon cisterns to collect filtered rainwater, rooms with large windows to harvest daylight, efficient fluorescent lights and occupancy sensors to turn lights on and off. In addition, building materials were obtained from regional manufacturers whenever possible and more than 95 percent of the construction waste was recycled.

The school, which was completed last summer, was designed by Moseley Architects.
