Community Brief: Local laureate

Posted on August 21, 2008 by Staff

The Triangle area will now boast its own Piedmont Laureate. Applications are now being accepted for the Laureate positions from poets from Wake, Durham or Orange Counties.

To “promote awareness and heighten appreciation for excellence in the literary arts throughout the Piedmont area,” the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, Durham Arts Council, Orange County Arts Commission and the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County are coming together to sponsor the program.

The laureate will present public readings and workshops, participate at public functions and create one original activity to advocate for literature. The winner will also receive an honorarium of $5,000. Only poets will be considered this year, but in future years other writers will be invited to apply.

For more informationor an application, see www.raleighnc.gov/arts or contact belva.parker@ci.raleigh.nc.us or 890-3610. Applications are also available at libraries. The deadline for applications is Aug. 29.
