For the Record: Thanks, Ellen

Posted on August 21, 2008 by Staff

Aug. 7 was Ellen Perry Day in Carrboro, and rightly so.

Her tireless devotion to the cause of individuals with special needs is evident in her near-constant presence at local board meetings; and through her organizing and advocacy, she manages to keep politicians, policymakers and the media mindful of the need to consider the impact of decisions on the lives of those whose access and mobility require attentive consideration and planning.

The Citizen would like to join with the Town of Carrboro in congratulating Ellen Perry on her award.

An excerpt from the dedication of the day follows.

“WHEREAS, she has worked tirelessly for the creation of more housing options for handicapped individuals in the Town of Carrboro; and

WHEREAS, she has volunteered numerous hours to Carrboro events and committees, giving the gift of her time; and

WHEREAS, she is a strong woman whose determination and positive outlook on life has made a significant impact on the Carrboro community, helping people to understand that people with disabilities think and act independently; and

WHEREAS, she has played a pivotal role in the Hurricane Katrina Equipment Distribution Program for People with Disabilities and Older People.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Mark Chilton, the Mayor of the Town of Carrboro, North Carolina, recognize the accomplishments of Ellen Perry, a valued and respected member of the Carrboro community, for her many years of service and dedication to Carrboro citizens by declaring Thursday, Aug. 7th as “Ellen Perry Day” in the Town of Carrboro.

This the 7th day of August 2008.”

—Mark Chilton, Mayor
