New CHS soccer coach finds early success

The beginning of the 2008-09 Carrboro High School men’s soccer season couldn’t have started off any better for first-year coach James Mundia, as his Jaguars won their home opener over Chatham Central High School by a score of 16-0, then prevailed in their first conference game, a 3-2 victory over Graham High.

The team dominated the field against Chatham Central on Wednesday, but Mundia wants to emphasize that the result of their first match would not lead to impractical prognoses.

“The coaching staff doesn’t want to have unrealistic expectations,” Mundia said. “I mean, our first goal was to just win our home opener. Beyond that, we want to become top three in the conference and make the state championship tournament.”

Mundia, a native of Kenya, is familiar with the Research Triangle area. He attended William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh and recently graduated from UNC with a degree in exercise and sports medicine. His prior coaching experience includes coaching the Emerson Waldorf Middle School girl’s basketball team and serving as a soccer instructor at the Dream Sports Center in Apex.

Led against Chatham Central by the senior leadership of co-captains Robert Kenny and Will Powell, each tallying four goals, the Jaguars displayed the attitude that Mundia has instilled in the team.

“The team shows up every day ready to compete and ready to win,” said Mundia. “They are adjusting to the new fast-tempo system rapidly. They are extremely talented players.”
