Obituary: William W. Camp

William Winfield Camp, 86, passed away on September 1, 2008. William was born on May 5, 1922 in Atlantic City, NJ.

William was preceded by his parents, Emma Helen Bloom and Frank Winfield Camp and his daughter, Patricia Della Camp Lang.

World War II Veteran serving in the US Coast Guard as a Higgins Boat (Landing Craft) operator trained at Lake Pontchatraine and then training Marines at Camp LeJeune to scale ships from Higgins Boats. He later served off the coast of England on submarine watch and was then stationed in Iceland for Air & Sea rescue.

William had attended Franklin & Marshall College with Master of Science, Physics, Stevens Institute of Technology with Mechanical Engineering Degree, US Coast Guard Academy Prep School.

William’s career including, Vice President of Engineering, GTE/Challenger/Westinghouse of Isla Verde, PR; Vice President of Engineering, Heinemann Electric Company of Lawrenceville, NJ; Supervisor of Special Projects, Schick Shaver of Lancaster, PA; Mathematics instructor and associate professor at Trenton Junior and Franklin & Marshall Colleges. Post retirement he provided expert testimony in Circuit Breaker cases.

With 12 patents to his name, his inventions included the cordless electric shaver and circuit breakers used in the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs.

His fondest times were being with his wife of almost 59 years and their children and grandchildren, and of course his hobbies golf, sailing, photography and computers.

William is survived by his wife, Louise Vezzetti Camp; son Frank W. Camp of Hillsborough, NC; daughter, Coleen Camp and her husband Alan Hopson of Oceanport, NJ; son-in-law, Christopher Rush Lang of Parkton, MD; grandchildren, Amelia Louise & Benjamin Rush Lang of Parkton, MD, and Taylor Louise & Meredith Rose Camp of Hillsborough, NC; sister Clementine Camp of Ventnor, NJ.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 920 Carmichael Street, Chapel Hill, on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 10 a.m. Visitation from 9:30 am before the mass.
