Letter to the editor: New guy in town

Posted on September 25, 2008 by Staff

There’s a new guy in town and it’s about time. William “B.J.” Lawson, a creative young physician and entrepreneur, is running against incumbent Rep. David Price for U.S. Congress. B.J. is running as a Republican, but when you meet him, you’ll quickly realize that you are facing our next generation of leader. I hope the local press will cover this extraordinary candidate for Congress.

B.J. is fighting for civil liberties and accountable government. He’s against war and torture, and is committed to building local, sustainable economies. He’s shifted my thinking about government programs, and I, a lifelong Democrat, now believe that consumer-driven healthcare offers our best path to quality, affordable healthcare for everyone.

Above all, B.J. is committed to returning control over America to Americans. His stands are rarely left or right — instead he asks, “Is it Constitutionally-sanctioned for the federal government?” If possible, he’ll engage you in a discussion of the underlying issues and offer tangible ideas for local solutions. He believes that “federal programs are easily co-opted by special interests” so he avoids them.

To assure good government, B.J. wants Congress to be legally bound to read the bills before they vote and write the laws themselves. He wants Congress to stop confusing us with lengthy legislation, like the recent 600-page Farm Bill packed with earmarks and unrelated provisions. He’s in favor of legislation that is limited to one subject at a time.

B.J. stands firmly against the bio-lab in Granville County because he knows the risks far outweigh the benefits and he’s not partial to allowing the Department of Homeland Security to secretly study dangerous and highly contagious diseases in our backyard. Unlike Rep. Price, B.J. will fight to keep this facility out of N.C. because he believes our safety is more important than research grants from DHS.

B.J. is energetic and unencumbered – so he’ll need help from the press to be introduced to the public. Talk to him yourself. He just may inspire you to believe that, with the right leadership, government can once again serve us all.
