To celebrate its last Wednesday market of the year, the Carrboro Farmers’ Market will host an afternoon of family activities, food and pumpkin decorating at the market’s Family Day.

This is the first year the market has hosted a Family Day to celebrate the last Wednesday market.

“We just thought we’d step it up a little bit,” said Sarah Blacklin, manager of the Carrboro Farmers’ Market. “We’ve had so much fun in our Wednesday markets this year.”

The event will have a little something for everyone, and Blacklin encourages folks of all ages to come out.

“We’re going to do a combination of food and family/kids events,” Blacklin said.

Family Day will feature a number of children’s activities, including arts and crafts, games and a scavenger hunt with prizes donated by Kidzu Children’s Museum. Participants can also paint pumpkins donated by local farmers in the market’s grassy area.

In addition, Andrea Reusing, chef at Lantern restaurant and a local Slow Foods proponent, will lead cooking demos and provide samples throughout the event.

“She’ll be doing some fall-themed foods,” Blacklin said, adding that Reusing’s creations will likely derive from what’s available at the market. Cider will also be available.

The event is sponsored by the Orange County Partnership for Young Children’s Healthy Kids Campaign, Kidzu Children’s Museum and Lantern restaurant.

“It’s a bunch of us just coming together and wanting to do a project for the community,” Blacklin said.

Family Day will be held during regular Wednesday market hours, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Carrboro Town Commons.

The Wednesday market at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market will reopen the first Wednesday in April of next year. The Saturday market runs year-round, but will switch to winter hours, 9 a.m. to noon, on Nov. 6.
