The Carrboro Board of Aldermen voted unanimously on Tuesday to ask staff to prepare an ordinance limiting local campaign contributions to $250.
The state General Assembly passed a local bill in July authorizing Carrboro to adopt an ordinance limiting the amount of money that any individual or committee may contribute to a candidate for town office.
Under state law, individuals or entities cannot contribute more than $4,000 to any candidate or political committee. The amendment to the Town of Carrboro’s charter would reduce that amount to $250, the minimum amount allowed by the General Assembly’s local bill.
If approved, the new limits would go into effect for the 2009 local elections, which include a board of aldermen race. The amendment must be renewed every two years. The board will hold a public hearing regarding the ordinance in January.
