Community meeting on airport to be held at White Cross

Posted on October 23, 2008 by Staff

Preserve Rural Orange will hold an open community meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. at the White Cross Recreation Center on White Cross Road in Chapel Hill.
Preserve Rural Orange is a group of rural county residents concerned about the possibility of a new airport at a site near White Cross in southwest Orange County. The site was identified as a possible location for a new airport in a 2005 consultant’s report to UNC.

The General Assembly this summer voted to allow the UNC Board of Governors to create a 15-member airport authority to site a replacement for Horace Williams Airport, which will be redeveloped as part of the Carolina North project.

At the meeting, several speakers will discuss the latest developments and potential impacts of UNC’s airport plans in rural Orange County. Speakers will include Sen. Ellie Kinnaird; Bernadette Pelissier, a candidate for Orange County Commissioner; Mitch Renkow, an NC State economist; Elaine Chiosso, executive director of Haw River Assembly; Jutta Kuenzler, of the Kuenzler W-ildlife Habitat Preserve; Nancy Holt, of Carolina Concerned Citizens; and local landowners.

A question-and-answer follows the speakers. For more, visit preserveruralorange.org
