News brief: Abortion protest raises hackles

Posted on October 23, 2008 by Staff

Three 18-foot tall billboards with jarring images of aborted fetuses towered over passers-by in Polk Place on the UNC campus Wednesday.

“It’s a violation of personal freedoms,” junior John McElwee, of Charlotte, said. “I’m coerced to look at dead fetuses on my way to class; it’s the equivalent of someone outside my front door with a loudspeaker.”

Signs warned those approaching the sight to do so with caution, informational booths were strategically placed around the show and paper boards invited students to express their opinions.

“This is an emotional assault,” senior Abi Wilson said.

The exhibit was installed by Carolina Students for Life, a student organization against abortion, and Justice for All, a similar organization from Wichita, Kan. Carolina Students for Life used $5,000 it received from student congress at the start of the academic year to fund the display. — Catherine Rierson
