The Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities will celebrate human rights throughout the week to honor the 60-year anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was presented to the United Nations on Dec. 9, 1948 and signed by member nations on Dec. 10.
Events this weekend include, on Friday, A day-long series of presentations and performances at the Carrboro Century Center. From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. speakers from area nonprofits will address the role of their organizations in promoting and protecting human rights. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. a jazz duo performs. From 1:30 to 3:30 Hidden Voices will perform. From 4 to 6 the topic is Racial Justice featuring speakers from the area.From 7:30 to 9:30 the topic will be Migrants Voices featuring migrant speakers. And from 7 to 9 p.m. Labor Rights will be under discussion featuring many speakers and advocates from the area.
On Saturday, Scene and Heard Interactive Theater performs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hargraves Community Center.
On Sunday, events and lectures continue. From 3 to 5 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting House, “The Richness of Religious Diversity: A Human Rights Perspective,†features panelists offering diverse views.
Also on Sunday, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Environmental Justice: The Rogers Road Struggle†at the Chapel Hill Public Library will offer speakers from the heart of the battle over the landfill and transfer station.
And from 7 to 9 p.m., see “Local Food, Sustainability, and Human Rights†at the Homestead Community Center,†with panelists who will discuss these important and topical subjects.
