The Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities will celebrate human rights throughout the week to honor the 60-year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was presented to the United Nations on Dec. 9, 1948 and signed by member nations the next day.
The weekend kicks off with a day-long series of presentations and performances at the Carrboro Century Center on Friday. From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. speakers from area nonprofits will address the role of their organizations in promoting and protecting human rights. From 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. a jazz duo performs, followed by a performance by Hidden Voices from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. From 4 to 6 the topic is racial justice, and from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. the topic will be migrants voices.
In addition, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Homestead Community Center, many speakers and advocates from the area will discuss labor rights.
On Saturday, Scene and Heard Interactive Theater performs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Hargraves Community Center.
On Sunday, events and lectures continue. From 3 to 5 p.m. at the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting House, “The Richness of Religious Diversity: A Human Rights Perspective,†features panelists offering diverse views.
Also on Sunday, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. is “Environmental Justice: The Rogers Road Struggle†at the Chapel Hill Public Library.
And from 7 to 9 p.m., see “Local Food, Sustainability, and Human Rights†at the Homestead Community Center, with panelists who will discuss these important and topical subjects.
