Obituary: Louisa Douglass

Louisa Douglass, age 88, of Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, died Dec. 13. Daughter of the late Rev. John Marshall & Ruth Forbes Millard, she was raised in the Old Alamance Presbyterian Church community outside of Greensboro, N.C. Louisa attended Greensboro College, earned her B.A. from Women’s College, and her M.A. Ed. from at the University of North Carolina. She taught in the public school system in Pleasant Garden, Laurinburg, and Durham for 31 years. In Durham, she was chosen to teach in an experimental open classroom for the Ford Foundation.

Louisa served as a docent in the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill and as a volunteer at the Botanical Garden. She will be remembered as open-minded, generous and caring, and for the beautiful gardens surrounding her residences.

A University Presbyterian Church member since 1950, Louisa also attended New Hope Presbyterian Church. Her first husband, Fred MacIsaac, died in 1951. In 1959, Louisa married Elisha P. Douglass (1915-2001), former history professor at UNC.

She is survived by her loving family: son Marshall MacIsaac of Buckingham, Va.; son Earl Douglass and his wife Debra of Wilmington, N.C.; daughter-in-law Jnanam MacIsaac of Charlottesville, Va.; sister-in-law Dorothy Allen of Southern Pines, N.C.; stepdaughter Adair Douglass; granddaughter Vani Li MacIsaac; grandsons Jonathan & Christopher Douglass; godson James Griffin, his mother & father, Ann & Patrick Griffin, and his sister Catherine; and nephews and nieces.

A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held Dec. 19, 2 p.m. at Carol Woods Assembly Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to University Presbyterian Church, 209 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514 or to Carol Woods Facilities Enhancement Fund, 750 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.
