Posted on December 23, 2008 by Staff

Claire Butcher died on December 10, 2008, at North Carolina Memorial Hospital.

She was born on November 7, 1930, to Paul and Estella Tenney. On August 26, 1950, she married James H. Butcher. They had two children – J. Jeffrey Butcher and Elaine Butcher Moorefield. She is survived by her husband, Jim, by her son Jeff and his wife Jan of Stephens City, VA, and her daughter Elaine and her husband Allen of Auburn, IN. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren – Aaron Moorefield of Maplewood, NJ, Rebekah Moorefield of Fort Wayne, IN, Ben Butcher of Reston, VA, Seth Moorefield of Auburn, IN and Laura Butcher of Stephens City, VA.

A graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and of Actual Business College, Mrs. Butcher also took classes at the University of Akron. She worked as the Membership Secretary of First United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and as the legal secretary for her husband, Jim Butcher.

In 1987 Jim and Claire retired to Colington Harbor on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where they enjoyed boating and watching sunsets over the Albemarle Sound. In 1999 they moved to Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill where they became part of a warm and loving community. Affirmed for her gifts and her desire to assist others, Claire helped to coordinate the activities of the Resident Business Center and was a Building 4 Floor Representative for the Safety Committee. She was a Video Assistant and appeared as her husband’s assistant in his magic act. Claire always laughed at her husband’s jokes. While her hobby was water aerobics her passion was the caring for cats and she spent many hours looking after the pets of the residents in Assisted Living often taking their pet to the veterinarian for them.

A private burial will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life was held at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community, conducted by her son, the Rev. J. Jeffrey Butcher.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Carolina Meadows Memorial Fund, 100 Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
