This from Chapel Hill officials on road conditions:
Update – Inclement Winter Weather Conditions
Due to the inclement weather conditions, scheduled residential garbage service for today has been cancelled. Monday’s route will be collected on Thursday and Tuesday’s route will be collected on Friday. As a result, there will be no yard
waste collection service this week. We anticipate returning to a normal collection schedule next week.
The Town of Chapel Hill Public Works Department and NCDOT continues to apply salt/sand to the primary routes. Snow plowing will occur as conditions permits The Town’s snow removal plan gives first priority to major thoroughfares, bus routes and hospital areas. The second priority is the major collector streets that feed through
the major arterial routes plus trouble spots such as hills and dangerous intersections. When these streets are passable, the next focus is the minor
collector streets and finally neighborhood streets.
Due to current conditions and temperatures in the teens overnight, we anticipate poor driving conditions overnight and tomorrow morning. We do not anticipate having sufficient resources within the next twenty-four hours to salt and sand the minor collector streets or local neighborhood streets; rather, our focus will remain on
the primary routes, major collector streets and trouble spots such as hills and dangerous intersections. The police department has responded to several reports concerning traffic accidents and motorists that have lost control of their vehicles. The police department is urging residents to avoid traveling on roadways unless absolutely necessary.
Residents and property owners are responsible for snow and ice removal in their driveways, apartment access roads, parking lots and sidewalks. The clearing of private streets is the responsibility of the homeowners within that subdivision.
For more information during inclement weather, residents should check local media outlets, the official Town website at www.townofchapelhill.org or call (919) 968-2870.
