Council revisits density issue

Posted on March 19, 2009 by Staff

The Chapel Hill Town Council decided to take another hard look at a plan that would create a new higher density zone. At the council’s meeting Monday night at Town Hall, Mayor Kevin Foy said he was uncomfortable with the plan because although it was designed to increase density downtown it could be applied to many other areas in town.

In other action, the council also reviewed a concept plan for expansion of the Wesley Foundation building on Pittsboro Street.

Residents of the Cameron-McCauley Historic District have expressed concern about the expansion, saying that despite a scaled-down design they’re still worried about how it will affect the neighborhood. Originally set at five stories and 160 beds, the new plan calls for four stories and 148 beds.

UNC business professor and Wesley Foundation board member Nick Didow said the project had been trimmed back as much as is possible. Further reducing the number of rooms would make the project financially infeasible, Didow told the council.
