Obituary: Clyde Lewis Duke

Mr. Clyde Lewis Duke, 75, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Britthaven of Chapel Hill.

Mr. Duke was a native of Durham but had lived in Chapel Hill most of his life. He was the son of the late Garland L. Duke and Jeppie Mae Pendergrass. Mr. Duke was retired from the Cary Police Department where he worked as a dispatcher. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Duke attended the N.C. School for the Blind in Raleigh and was an avid collector of John Wayne memorabilia. On one occasion, he even traveled to California and met Mr. Wayne’s wife and become friends with her.
He is survived by a sister, Willie Ann Dollar, of Graham; a brother, Edward W. Clark, of Chapel Hill; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, Rehabilitation Services, 301 Ashe Ave., Raleigh, NC 27606.
