Obituary: Richard M. MacLeod

Posted on April 2, 2009 by Staff

Richard Morrison MacLeod, 74, passed away March 18, 2009 after a long-term illness.

He was born in Springfield, Mass. November 25, 1934 to Roderick and Gertrude MacLeod. At the tender age of 17 year old, Richard entered into the United States Air Force and spent the next 22 years serving his country.

He was very proud of his military service and retired in 1973. During his service years he spent much time overseas, twice in Europe, and during the Vietnam War, he spent two tours in Thailand in a supporting role of the war. After retirement from the Air Force, he and his family moved to Broward County, Fla. and spent the next 36 years there before moving to North Carolina. He worked as a social worker for Broward County for 25 years and retired in 1999. While working as a social worker, he started a very successful mobile unit. He helped many county residents and found many friends during this service. Being retired was not in his plans, so he worked part time for the County Homeless Program for the following six years. Then he decided he wanted to “play more,” so he and his wife of 50 years spent these last years traveling and cruising the oceans.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Janice MacLeod, of Pittsboro, NC; and a sister, Margaret (Ernest) Smith of Holden, MA. He also leaves two daughters, Lisa (Mark) Gough, of Pittsboro NC; and Cheryl (Matthew) Stanislawski of Boynton Beach, FL; and a son, Richard (Holly) MacLeod of Durham NC. He also leaves six grandchildren, Kelly (Michael) Boyd, Nicholas Stanislawski, Melissa Stanislawski, Jahn Billaber, Charli and Nina MacLeod. His children and grandchildren were the most important gifts he gave to this world.
A memorial service was held to celebrate his life at Walker’s Funeral Home on Friday, March 27, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to give to American Lung Association, or any other charity of your choice.
