Smith math students compete at regional contest

Smith Middle School math students performed well at the qualifying round of the State Math Competition in Raleigh last week.

The Smith Algebra I team came in second place. Team members are Joey Carlstein, Alex Change, Paul Zeo, Mitchell Dougall and Christopher Zhen. Carlstein came in third place individually, while Change placed fourth, and both will advance to the state finals.

The Smith geometry team placed fourth. Team members are Arun Ganesh, Jin Kang, Jessica Gao, Paul Lee and Shiyi Li. Ganesh placed fifth and Kang came in seventh. Both will advance to the state finals.

In addition, Hastings Greer competed in Algebra II and will advance to the state finals after placing seventh.

The students are taught by Boyd Blackburn and Noa Stuchiner.
