Southern Village hotel plan put on hold

Posted on April 9, 2009 by Staff

Bryan Properties announced this week that the company will not pursue plans for a hotel in the Southern Village Center.

The proposed 90-to-100-room hotel was intended to help add foot traffic to the community’s commercial district but was met with strong opposition from some nearby residents.

In a statement released Tuesday, Southern Village developer D.R. Bryan said the project was on hold and the company would work with the homeowners’ association and businesses to develop a marketing plan and find other ways to improve the economic vitality of the village center.

“Many residents of Southern Village and virtually all of our business owners support the idea of a hotel as a third anchor, to complement Weaver Street Market and The Lumina Theatre,” Bryan said. “But the reality is that many residents in the neighborhood oppose having a hotel on this central parking lot. So we have decided to take their advice and try other things first, such as marketing more aggressively and trying to capture business from those who visit the new Southern Community Park.”
