You reported on 4/9 that, “The Local Living Economy Task Force hopes to launch educational campaigns,†which will help tell Carrboro citizens what’s available to them right here in town. As president of the 4-month-old Carrboro Merchants Association and the founder, along with my wife Helen, of the Walk Carrboro map, website and advertising campaign, I welcome all the help and support the town and its task force want to provide.
I started the Walk Carrboro campaign because we have a collection of terrific nationally and internationally respected treasures here in town. One of them joked recently that he is internationally respected and locally ignored. But that’s no one’s fault but our own. We need to let folks know … we’ve got world-class coffee, chocolate, comedy, and photography. We have remarkable wine and beer shops tended by folks who actually have tasted everything they sell. We have world-class pottery, a center for North Carolina Crafts, a shop dedicated entirely to beads and beading and a vintage clothing shop that’s frequented by Los Angeles celebrities and vintage clothing junkies from Brooklyn. We also serve everything from comfort food to fine dining.
What’s truly amazing is that all of the aforementioned shops and restaurants are within walking distance of one another, right here in Carrboro. Anyone interested can learn more about Carrboro today. Just ask for a free walking map the next time you’re in one of your favorite Carrboro institutions, such as Weaver Street Market or The Open Eye Café, or log onto carrboro.com. There you can read the mayor’s new blog, download a map or check out a calendar of local events.
Whatever the Local Living Economy Task Force decides to do to support our town will certainly be welcome. In the meantime, I invite everyone to Walk Carrboro.
