Way to go Tar Heels

Posted on April 16, 2009 by Staff

Love, loyalty, hard work and determination.

Even if you are not a big fan of the University of North Carolina men’s varsity basketball program or a fan of the game itself, you have to appreciate the way in which the team won the biggest of dances and brought home a national championship trophy.

If you are a fan, you’re probably thinking something along the lines of Chancellor Holden Thorp and head coach Roy Williams, who expressed their love for the team — not just for winning, but for how they went about it.

This team will be remembered for a lot of things, but the stats won’t reflect their uncommon commitment to each other and to achieving their mutual goal of a national championship. The upperclassmen who chose to return for another year rather than cash out and go pro after already stellar college careers provide a lasting example of what it means to be true to your school.

The way each of them battled through injuries only to emerge more determined, and the years of hard work in preparation, has shown their classmates and the rest of us that talent is only part of the make up of a champion.

And there was something refreshing about the criticisms by curmudgeons and fans of those knocked out of the tourney that the Tar Heels were packed with seasoned veterans. Though their achievements are many, challenging the assumption that the game of college hoops is now dominated by extremely talented sophomores and freshmen on their way to the pros may be one of the best things this team has done for the game, the conference and the NCAA.
