Posted on April 30, 2009 by Staff

Clara Ward Hardee Horton, 91, wife of Fred B. Horton for 53 years until his death in 2005, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 23, 2009.

She was born in Boardman in Columbus County on July 6, 1917 to Maude Hardee and Charles Van Ward, who both predeceased her. She had two brothers, Paul and Ralph Ward, who are also deceased. She was adopted at age three by her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. T.D. Hardee of Carrboro. Clara had five brothers, Trusie, Dawson, Everrett, Joe and Bill Hardee; and seven sisters, Mary, Bertha, Lonie, Dora, Maggie, Maude and Girline. All predeceased her. She was educated in Carrboro schools.

She is survived by two sons, Billy Van Blake (Cheryl) of Raleigh, granddaughters, Suzanne, Bobbie Ann and Mary Ann, and two great-granddaughters, Heydan and Jordan Holt; and Bobby Ward Blake (Darlene) of Carrboro, two granddaughters, Rebecca Lewis and Beth Anne Beyle (Jon), and five great grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Jon Ward Beyle, and J.C. and Blake Lewis.

Clara was a devoted member of Carrboro Baptist Church, now HillSong Church. Clara retired from Pacific Woolen Mill and BVD Plant. After her retirement, she kept children in her home, whom she loved just like her own grandchildren, Jason Crawford and Will Hackney, and many others.
Clara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and the world’s best cook. She had a beautiful smile and was a friend to all who knew her. Her legacy of God first and devotion to family are treasured traits. She will be greatly missed.

Services were held Sunday, April 26. Burial was at Westwood Cemetery, Carrboro. Memorials may be made to UNC Hospice.

Arrangements by Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill.
