Students file complaint against campus police

Posted on May 7, 2009 by Staff

A UNC student group has filed a formal complaint with the UNC Department of Public Safety.

The group, the UNC Protesters Defense Committee, claims DPS “has failed to serve and protect the university community” and has “created a chilling effect that suppresses student activism and free expression on campus” by “attacking, intimidating and arresting protesters,” a press release from the group states.

The group filed the complaint at a re-accreditation public hearing regarding DPS on Monday. According to the press release, the group alleges DPS “initiated violence against a peaceful, nonviolent demonstration” during the April 14 protest against anti-immigration speaker Tom Tancredo. The group also alleges officers acted improperly toward protesters at the April 22 talk of anti-immigration speaker Virgil Goode.
