Big City: May 14-21

Posted on May 21, 2009 by Staff

Move over Clyde Jones

A tree grew in Chapel Hill. Then the Heels won another national championship and that night some (probably drunken) idiots snapped its crown.

The tree, formerly an 11-foot green ash, grew in front of Spanky’s. Like a lot of urban trees, it was in a struggle for survival even before the celebrants came along. According to a release from the town, it had been recommended for replacement in 2007.

But after viewing the damage to the ash the day after the big win, Mayor Kevin Foy had the idea of turning the stump into some kind of art.

Fortunately, the town has an in-house wood carver in the person of economic-development director Dwight Bassett, who, according to the release, “envisions a vertical segment of a player with arm extended and holding a basketball.” Bassett began work on Tuesday and will be carving away again on Friday.

En pointe, folks

As large banners in the downtown will soon note, the world-famous Bolshoi ballet is coming to town this summer for an extended visit with four performances at Memorial Hall, June 10 through 14.

The Orange County Visitor’s Bureau has passed on a request from Carolina Performing Arts director Emil Kang asking us locals, especially shopkeepers in the downtown, to do a little something extra to give the 180 members of the company a warm welcome.

Probably a little late to order a Faberge Egg for your front window, but you can get a nifty Welcome Bolshoi sign from the visitor’s bureau.

Riddle me this

Good work by Chapel Hill Magazine on getting an interview with the illusive Joe Riddle Jr., whose properties include the southwest corner of Columbia and Franklin streets and the old University Chrysler building.

Like him or not, the fellow does have control of some critical downtown spots, including the Chrysler lot next door to Lantern that is a potential solution to West End parking woes.
