Government shouldn’t run health care

Posted on May 21, 2009 by Staff

In reading an opinion editorial that ran in your paper on Thursday, I was surprised at how out of touch the author was with the concerns of North Carolinians when it comes to health care. He talked about certain reforms that might sound good in theory, but in practice, they have nearly doubled and tripled the cost of health insurance to the uninsured and the self-employed. Putting the government in charge of your health care is not the kind of reform that North Carolinians can afford.

My goal is not only to make sure that every American has health insurance, but to ensure that it is at least equal in quality to that enjoyed by members of Congress. This week, I will introduce a bill that includes reforms to actually put money in the hands of everyday Americans – regardless of income or employer – to purchase health insurance.

To date, only health care experts have been asked to review this piece of legislation. Clearly, the author of your opinion editorial did not fall into that classification.
We don’t need to spend more or make the government bigger to do this. The problem in health care today is that Americans aren’t getting enough value for their dollars. We spend nearly twice what other industrialized nations spend on health care per person, yet we are not twice as healthy.

The American people deserve better. We can achieve universal access to quality, affordable health care but we don’t have to bankrupt our children with trillions more in debt or impose massive tax hikes to do it.

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr
