Student wins national contest

Posted on May 21, 2009 by Staff

Phillips Middle School seventh-grader Kathy Dai recently won the national Listen to a Life Essay Contest for her essay about her 72-year-old neighbor, Helen Simms.

For the contest, students aged 8 to 18 interview a grandparent or friend 50 or older and then write 300-word essays. Dai wrote about Simms’ experiences in the Civil Rights Movement.

The annual contest, run by the Legacy Project, offers students an opportunity to learn about real life from real people. For more information, visit legacyproject.org
