Big City

Posted on May 28, 2009 by Staff

If you’re looking for fresh information about what’s going to happen to The Varsity, don’t expect to find much soon. Recent details have been a bit confusing. After the initial round of rumors that the last picture show would be today (Thursday), the new buzz is that the place is on the market and may be sold. And it may or may not close in one to three. Owner Bruce Stone could not be reached for comment. Obviously.

Wonder what Walker Percy thinks about it. The Moviegoer author is seen in the photo at right standing in line in front of The Varsity while he was in school here. He’s the one in the white trousers with his leg extended.

The Scourge of a Civilized Society

Hat tip to Mitch Virchick for putting into words on his Facebook page what drives a lot of us crazy, especially those of us negotiating the traffic in downtown Carrboro. You guess it — left hand turns.

(Insert lame joke about lefties and Carrboro here)

If you’re allergic to these, stay off North Greensboro Street almost any time of day. It doesn’t even matter which way you’re heading. Try going south when someone is waiting for that perfect parking spot in front of Open Eye or heading north when the Wendy’s drive-though is hopping and you’ll spend some time in traffic.

The worst place to attempt a left is from Greensboro Street heading west on Weaver Street. Those waiting for southbound traffic might be convinced they’re in the clear once the light goes to yellow. Wrong. The light for those southbound stays green longer. The safer option is to head left on Main, where you have an actual turn signal, then right on Main and right on Weaver.
