Plenty to do for the 4th

That never-ending stretch of 90-degree days means it’s finally summer, and the Fourth of July is here again.

While some brave souls will pack up the cars and head to the beach, it’s probably smarter to stay in the area and enjoy the festivities that Orange County has to offer.

Carrboro will kick off Independence Day with a special 4th of July Farmers’ Market in front of Town Hall from 7 to 10 a.m., moving from its usual home on the Town Commons to make way for the town’s festivities, which start at 9:30 at Weaver Street Market.

There you can join in the spirit by getting a patriotic tattoo (temporary, of course); there will also be a costume contest, hat decorating and a place to spiff up your bike or wagon for the People’s Parade to Town Hall at 11.

The Town Commons will have live music all morning into early afternoon with room for picnics, games (highlighted by a pie-eating contest) and plenty of entertainment for the kids.

If you’re going to be in Chapel Hill, check out the picnic on the lawn of the Horace Williams House, where there’ll be patriotic music by the Village Band, free Maple View Farm ice cream and lemonade from 1 to 3 p.m.

And of course, you’re not really celebrating America unless fireworks are involved. Chapel Hill will hold a fireworks celebration at Kenan Memorial Stadium on the UNC campus. Gate 6 will open at 7 p.m. and there will be live music plus jugglers and face-painters until the fireworks start at 9:30. And if you want to stand out, be one of the first 8,000 through the gate to get free glow necklaces. No outside food or drink allowed, but concession stands will be open.

And for the eighth year in a row, The Cave will host the Evil Wiener Roast, serving hot dogs in the back parking lot, while local band Evil Wiener will celebrate by rocking out.

Plenty of fun is to be had Saturday with no worries of crowded beaches and sand in all the wrong places, though there will be some inconveniences to watch out for:

In Carrboro:

Main Street will be closed at Weaver Street (westbound Main Street traffic can turn left onto Laurel Avenue and right onto Weaver) from 5:30 to 11 a.m. on the Fourth. Ashe Street also will be closed at Main and Laurel, and Laurel Avenue will be closed at the Weaver Street/Town Hall Drive intersection. Any Driveways that exit onto Main Street between Fidelity Street and Weaver Street will be temporarily blocked during the People’s Parade.

The town will be closed on Monday, July 6, in observance of Independence Day. There will be no garbage collection that day. Monday garbage will be collected on Tuesday. Friday garbage will be collected as normal. There will be no change to the curbside recycling schedule.

In Chapel Hill:
Most municipal offices will be closed Friday, July 3, and there will be no garbage collection. Chapel Hill Transit will operate on a reduced Saturday Service schedule (U and NU routes will not operate) on Friday and will not operate Saturday. The Wallace Deck and Lot 2 will operate normal hours on Friday. Parking will be free on the Fourth. Meters and lots 3 and 5 will be free July 3 and 4.
