Center is needed

Posted on July 23, 2009 by Staff

Thank you for reporting the county’s plans to cut hours at solid waste convenience centers — a burden shared by all the rural residents. Surprisingly, after your reports quoted our commissioners expressing their concern for the rural community, they decided to close the Bradshaw Quarry Solid Waste Convenience Center. This is a blow to many rural residents who do not have trash pickup and will now have to regularly haul their household trash 10-15 miles away.

Cutting costs by shifting the burden to unsuspecting rural residents doesn’t make sense. Concerned residents and the local fire department have written to the board asking them to reconsider. So far, the commissioner’s responses have been flat, with little interest in considering alternatives.

Residents have suggested reducing the hours of the convenience centers to allow Bradshaw Quarry to remain open two or three days a week. In addition, we’ve asked the county to discontinue curbside recycling pickup in the rural county – a “fluff” service that was added about four years ago. Recently added services for large appliances. furniture, mattresses and electricals are unnecessary and residents are willing to haul those large items on those rare occasions that disposal is needed.

The Bradshaw Quarry Convenience Center is needed in our community and eliminating it places a large and disproportionate burden on a rural community, who are being asked to regularly drive long distances to dispose of their household trash. Hours and services can be reduced to save money, but eliminating household trash drop-off will impact our health and safety.

Lately, our community has felt constantly threatened by the insensitivity and disinterest of our local officials. It is not difficult to find creative and effective ways to reduce the costs of handling solid waste for the rural county. We’ve offered them to our commissioners — and we now need them to act!
