The trial of Alvaro Rafael Castillo, 22, of Hillsborough, who is charged with fatally shooting his father and opening fire at Orange High School, continues this week.
Castillo has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charges, which include first-degree murder.
Castillo’s lawyers argue that Castillo suffers from mental illness and did not know right from wrong when the shootings took place.
District Attorney Jim Woodall has disputed the claim, contending that Castillo’s plan was too methodical for him to have been psychotic.
The defense team will cross-examine Castillo’s psychiatrist and then bring in its own witnesses to argue against testimony offered by the state. Closing arguments will follow.
