Obituary: Anthony Kerrigan

Posted on August 20, 2009August 20, 2009 by Staff

Anthony (Tony) Kerrigan, 81, of Fearrington Village, N.C. passed away on August 6th after a long struggle with emphysema. Tony, the son of Arthur and Edith Kerrigan, grew up in Katonah, N.Y. and was educated at Phillips Andover Academy and Yale University, ’50. He was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corps and saw combat in Korea. Later, he joined Merrill Lynch, where he worked in sales and then as a floor broker on the American and New York Stock exchanges. Sensing the beginning of a seismic shift in the moral compass of Wall Street, Tony opted for early retirement. As a trustee of the Darrow School, he was instrumental in building alumni participation in school affairs and the success of its endowment fund.

Tony, a voracious reader, was happiest when delving into volumes of history, politics, religion and everything else that piqued his interest. Always eager to share his books, he dubbed his book shelves “Kerrigan’s Lending Library.” He also was an avid gardener and greatly enjoyed cheering on his sons’ efforts on the soccer and lacrosse fields when they were young.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Fearrington Village; sons Geoffrey and Timothy, both of Portland, Ore.; and his beloved dog and friend, Willow.
