Teacher receives grant

Posted on September 24, 2009September 24, 2009 by Staff

Kelly Sears, a science teacher at Smith Middle School, received a $1,400 grant from Donors Choose to support a project called “Taking the Pulse of Our Local Waterways.”

Sears requested the grant to support the purchase of an AP Environmental Workstation Bundle. The equipment will be used by students in Sears’ eighth-grade science classes.

Sears says the equipment will provide her students with opportunities to develop problem-solving and technology skills. Students will use the equipment to conduct a long-term, hands-on water quality study that will include data analysis. Sears describes the activity as “an authentic scientific investigation.”

Donors Choose is an online tool that allows teachers to post classroom needs for the public to read and support financially if they wish to do so.
