Council opts out of Dawson Hall purchase

Posted on October 1, 2009 by Staff

After a closed session discussion Monday night, the Chapel Hill Town Council decided against purchasing part of Dawson Hall, a 70,000-square-foot commercial building off Weaver Dairy Road.

Town Manager Roger Stancil had asked for authority from the council to negotiate the purchase of about two-thirds of the building. Stancil said he wanted to explore the possibility of using the building as a police headquarters and a temporary site for the Chapel Hill Public Library during the construction on the library’s expansion.

In a report to the council Monday, Stancil said he would not advise proceeding with the purchase and suggested the town work on alternatives for facilities for the Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation departments. He did recommend the town continue to explore short-term lease options for Dawson Hall during the library expansion.
