Endorsement Letter: Cook for alderman

Posted on October 1, 2009October 2, 2009 by Staff

For fellow parents in Carrboro hoping for more practical leadership in Town Hall, I strongly recommend Sharon Cook for the board of alderman.

Clearly, there are many important strategic and policy differences to be settled in Carrboro during the upcoming years on issues ranging from housing density and commercial development, to the melding of old Carrboro with new. Mrs. Cook’s experience on the town planning board and record of representing the Rogers Road-Eubanks neighbors suggest she will play a positive role in these long-term outcomes. However, her greatest contributions will come from her ability to realize the short-term initiatives that are most important to our everyday lives as parents.

To illustrate, Mrs. Cook’s advocacy for improved safety for students near Chapel Hill High directly led to the construction of sidewalks and a new traffic light on Homestead Road. She continues to work for safer conditions for our children as an appointee to a multi-jurisdictional committee working with N.C. DOT and as the founder of Students on Sidewalks. Further consider that as a parent of three, she has served in our schools, most notably as co-chair of Smith Middle’s inaugural governance committee. Mrs. Cook has seen first-hand how many older facilities, like Seawell Elementary and CHHS, are being neglected as the system is forced to build new schools.

This is a critical time for Carrboro. The challenges presented by tremendous residential growth have been compounded by a stagnant economy, and the range of views on the town’s future identity continues to broaden. Amidst these macro concerns, Sharon Cook’s practical and balanced perspective as a parent is exactly what we need to improve our town today.
