Obituary: Lawrence Feuer

Posted on October 1, 2009 by Staff

Lawrence Howard Feuer passed away at home in Fearrington Village, N.C. on Sept. 26. Larry was known for his wit and humor and his ability to make friends wherever he went.

Born in Brooklyn in 1925 and raised in Queens, Larry attended Queens College before serving as a PFC in the 301st Regiment of the 94th Infantry Division during World War II. He fought in the Ardennes, Northern France and the Rhineland campaigns. Those who have heard him describe himself as the worst soldier in the U.S. Army, single handedly delaying Allied victory by months, will be surprised to learn that he earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

When he returned from the war, Larry attended Columbia University and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration and began working as a commercial real estate broker. He married Carol Diamond in December, 1949, and soon worked for his father-in-law Jack Diamond at his menswear store in Brooklyn and then in Manhattan. Commuting from Long Island, Larry soon managed the store and eventually became the owner.

Larry’s real passions were his hobbies and he zealously maintained what he described as his professional dilettante status in all of them: sailing, photography, woodworking, astronomy, rhododendron and bonsai horticulture and painting.

Larry and Carol moved to Fearrington Village in 1998. He is survived by Carol, his wife of 59 years; his children, Jules Feuer, Matthew Feuer and Kim Ruys de Perez; his sister, Jane Kaufman; and grandchildren Alexander, Stephanie, Andrew, Rebecca and Emily.
