Obituary: Naomi Hewett

Naomi Jones Hewett, 86, of Carrboro, N.C. passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009 at Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion.

Naomi was born on May 1, 1923 in Brunswick County, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Gettie O. Jones and Frances Cox Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde C. Hewett, to whom she was married for 50 years prior to his death in 1989. She was married to Jessie “Jack” Parker of Pittsboro, N.C. until his death in 2005. Brothers preceding her in death are L.D. Jones, Edward O. Jones and G. Jarvis Jones, all of Oak Island, N.C., and infant deaths of a grandchild and great-grandchild.

Naomi and her husband established Hewett’s Ceramic Tile Company, where she maintained the role of bookkeeper while raising a family. During that time, she studied to become a nurse and worked at N.C. Memorial Hospital for several years until her retirement.

She was a member of Hillsborough Church of God and enjoyed fellowship with her family and friends.

Surviving members of her family are her sons, C. Odell Hewett and his wife, Lois, of Chapel Hill, Marvin G. Hewett and his wife, Barbara, of Hillsborough and Kenneth R. Hewett and his wife, Lynn, of Cary; her daughters, Donna H. Squires and her husband, John, of Chapel Hill and Diane H. Witham and her husband, George, of Carrboro. Surviving siblings are George Ray Jones, Larry Jones and Jeanette Roach, all of Oak Island, and Etta Mae Stanley of Shallotte. She has eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
