Endorsement Letter: Progressive leader

Posted on October 22, 2009 by Staff

The progressive leadership that has been reflected in the office of mayor of Chapel Hill, at least since the groundbreaking election of Howard Lee in the late ‘60s, will continue if those of us who have truly been a part of this wonderful community, and who understand what a special place it is in this state and nation, will get together and elect Mark Kleinschmidt to be our new mayor.

As a loyal resident for more than 50 years, a practicing lawyer, former member of the town council and solicitor of the Chapel Hill Recorder’s Court, I believe that the uniqueness of this Southern part of heaven could be easily diminished in a negative way if we fail to maintain reasonable development restrictions and focus only on commercial growth. Instead, we should continue to strive to avoid becoming just another sterile medium-sized city with a “chamber of commerce mentality.”

The critical issue is not whether one is pro or anti “business,” but rather whether the town of Chapel Hill can and will remain the charming, beautiful, liberal-minded and diverse community that we love. Our chances for success are far better with Mark Kleinschmidt as our mayor.

STEVE BERNHOLZ, Chapel Hill
