Endorsement Letter: Principled candidates

Posted on October 23, 2009 by Staff

I met Ed Harrison and Mark Kleinschmidt in 2001 when I was a candidate for Chapel Hill Town Council. Going to voter forums together and seeing how the other guy acts and reacts to you and others gives a person a chance to take a measure of a man and form an opinion about someone. Ed and Mark were and are honest, principled individuals. The big difference between their candidacies and mine was that both of them were better qualified candidates, and time has shown that both of them have been excellent council members.

Ed Harrison is always prepared in all matters that come before the council, especially environmental and ecological issues. But, in truth, non-motor transportation issues are the closest to Ed’s bike-riding heart. A lot of what Ed does for the council is out of the limelight, serving on inter-jurisdictional boards. But the depth of his expertise serves not only Chapel Hill but also the region.

After the ‘01 election, I served two terms on the Chapel Hill Human Services Advisory Board, the last two years as chair, and worked closely with Mark Kleinschmidt who served as the council liaison. Mark’s thoughtful guidance helped our board maintain funding though difficult fiscal times. Mark’s legal expertise and life experience has served our board and the town in many ways and his commitment to the less fortunate is an inspiration. I would like to see Mark serve as mayor to bring his intelligence, sensitivity and humanity to the office.

I have no reservations in giving my support and vote to the reelection of Ed Harrison to Chapel Hill Town Council and the election of Mark Kleinschmidt as Chapel Hill mayor.

LARRY DAQUIOAG, Chapel Hill
