I believe Donna Bell is the best choice for Chapel Hill Town Council. Why should she be there? I’ve had the pleasure of getting to appreciate Donna, as we are both on the town council-appointed Sustainable Community Visioning Task Force. Since May, we have been seeking to develop an effective vision of what we believe our town should be for the future. As we struggle with the large challenges of transportation, development, growth and economic viability, there has been, so far, a lack in the basic human and social living questions. I’ve seen Donna’s wisdom, judgment and concern for these basic and very-important issues of life, compassion and the human condition. Her residence in the Northside of Chapel Hill since 2002 and participation on the Empowerment and Village Project boards as well as her graduate degree in social work and teaching in the Human Services Department of Elon University reflect these values.
As a married mother with two children, these experiences are reinforced, balanced and nurtured. I’ve shared her concerns on the task force about this town’s ongoing struggle with diversity and equality and support her expressed commitments for providing the diverse voices, equality of expression and support for a broad base of sustainability for all who live, work and enjoy what this “ Southern Part of Heaven†has and continues to claim for its diverse population.
I hope the town council will vote her to our policy and governing board.
