Affordable housing ordinance

Posted on December 3, 2009 by Staff

The Town of Chapel Hill has started a public review process for a draft Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance to help address the need for more affordable housing in Chapel Hill.

A public information open house is scheduled for tonight (Thursday) from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hargraves Center, 216 N. Roberson St. Repeating presentations will take place at 4:15, 5:30 and 7 p.m.

If enacted, developers would be required to make at least 15 percent of their dwelling units affordable to households with incomes between 65 and 80 percent of the area median income. The requirements would apply to new residential developments of five or more units.

A task force appointed by the town council developed ideas and worked with consultants to prepare the draft ordinance, posted online at townhall.townofchapelhill.org/agendas/2009/09/28/7b/ and available by calling 968-2728.
