The Assembly of Governments meeting Monday night addressed the issue of library financing between Orange County, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, including whether Orange County should contribute more to the Chapel Hill Library.
About 40 percent of those who use the Chapel Hill Library do not live in Chapel Hill and do not pay taxes in Chapel Hill. Orange County hasn’t increased the amount it contributes (currently $249,333 a year) since 2001-02.
Also discussed Monday was Orange County’s capital improvement plan which includes a Southwest Regional library, but does not say how the project would be funded.
The assembly asked that town and county officials prepare a report laying out a plan for the county to provide more assistance to Chapel Hill for operational expenses, but not capital expenses.
