Speaking competition

Posted on February 25, 2010 by Staff

Melanie Rio, a senior at Carrboro High School, was selected to advance in regional competition of the English Speaking Union’s National Shakespeare Competition.

Carrboro High hosted a qualifying round for the competition on Thursday, Feb. 11. At the regional contest, to be held today (Thurs.) at Wake Technical Community College, students from eastern North Carolina high schools will perform a 20-line monologue and sonnet. The winner of this competition will receive an expenses-paid trip to New York City for the national competition.

In preparation for the CHS contest, 14 students participated in a four-week Shakespeare Acting Workshop led by a visiting artist from UNC’s Playmakers Repertory Company. The workshop was sponsored by Encore, the school’s performing-arts booster club. It was funded in part by a grant from the Orange County Arts Commission.

Senior Marshall Rogalski finished second in the qualifying round, while sophomore Alexa Yaemes placed third.
