Kitty Heller, a teacher at Carrboro Elementary School, was selected to receive an environmental education grant. The award is part of N.C. Beautiful’s Windows of Opportunity Grants and was made possible by a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. These grants reward teachers in the Duke Energy service area and are a reflection of the teacher’s commitment and creativity in involving their students in environmental stewardship.
Heller will use the award to work with first-grade students, teachers and staff to indentify and mark native North Carolina trees on the school campus. Students will write and publish a tree guidebook with drawings, poems and photography to describe locating the trees.
