In the first confirmed Orange County rabies case of 2010, Orange County Animal Services received a positive rabies result for a raccoon. On March 16, the raccoon attacked the dog of a Chapel Hill resident in the vicinity of Mount Caramel Church Road and South Columbia Street. After a neighbor shot and killed the raccoon, the resident contacted animal services to remove the animal for testing at the North Carolina Rabies Laboratory.
Animal services director Bob Marotto stressed the importance of effective rabies control.
“Knowing to call animal services immediately and booster your animal within the 120-hour period required by N.C. general statute is always of extreme importance,†he said.
