ArtsCenter launches $350k campaign

CARRBORO – Over the past 35 years, The ArtsCenter has become a mainstay in Carrboro, offering programs, services and classes that can’t be found elsewhere in the area. But the recession has taken its toll, and the longtime local favorite needs funding.

On Monday, The ArtsCenter will kick off a $350,000 fundraising campaign, Keeping Arts Centered, that will continue through July 1.

The ArtsCenter purchased its building in 1996 and has no plans to leave its Main Street location, but the facilities are starting to show their age. Over the past seven months, ArtsCenter staff compiled a long list of needs.

“What we’re looking for are things that are related to our customer service delivery or program delivery,” Executive Director Ed Camp said.

Top priorities are a new sound system for the theater and a new HVAC system, as well as repairs to the building’s sprinkler system, he said.

“We’ve got a dance floor that has holes in it. We’ve got bathrooms that really need some attention,” Camp said, adding that The ArtsCenter kitchen needs updating as well.

In addition, he hopes to establish an ArtsCenter endowment, increase the scholarship fund and pay down ArtsCenter debt.

A list of all ArtsCenter needs will be available at the box office on Monday, and those who want to donate can dedicate their donation to a specific project.

The ArtsCenter covers about 80 percent of its budget through the programs and services it offers. The rest comes from donations, grants and fundraising efforts.

As is the case with most nonprofits, The ArtsCenter has seen a drop in donations, but also in program attendance and enrollment. Donations are down about $35,000 this year, but overall income has declined by about $100,000, Camp said.

“We have programs that haven’t achieved as much as they have in the past,” he said.

Despite the drop in funding, Camp said, The ArtsCenter will continue to offer the same programs.

“We’ll continue doing what we have been doing. We have no plans at this point to change any programs,” he said. “The reality of the situation is these programs do cost money and that money has to come from somewhere.”

On May 8, The ArtsCenter will host Cirque des Artes, a 35th-anniversary celebration and fundraising event. The event will feature an outdoor festival with street theater, music and family fun from noon to 4 p.m., as well as an evening cocktail party with music by the Triangle Jazz Band and a silent auction from 8 to 11 p.m. The outdoor festival will be pay-as-you-go, while tickets for the evening party are $50 per person or $75 per couple.
