The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education last week approved a recommended budget for the 2010-11 school year. The $128.4 billion budget would increase school funding by 2 percent, or $62 per student. The budget would continue work on all expansion projects and bring per-student funding up to $3,158. Though state and local funding for schools has yet to be determined, the board is not expecting an increase in funding from the county commissioners. On the state level, projections indicate that there may be a 3 percent cut in funding, accounting for about $1.6 million. This cut, in addition to a likely decrease in tax revenues, means tough decisions loom as the board finds ways to reduce spending.
