Students raise tobacco awareness with Kick Butts Day

Posted on April 1, 2010 by Staff

Teens from Orange County TRU (Tobacco Reality Unfiltered) joined thousands of youth across the country on March 24 in taking part in national Kick Butts Day (KBD). Kick Butts Day engages youth in the effort to discourage tobacco use. As part of the KBD initiative, students in TRU groups conducted activities in their schools and communities.

“Participating in Kick Butts Day is important to me because it allows me to express my tobacco-free lifestyle while at the same time bringing awareness to the subject,” said Chapel Hill High School TRU Vice President Jasmine White-Bynum. Jasmine and fellow TRU students at Chapel Hill High School held a Kick Butts Day event in the lower gym at the school with educational booths and activities. Meanwhile, students at East Chapel Hill High School created a “1200” display to illustrate the number of people who die every day in the United States due to tobacco-related illnesses.

“Kids are a powerful part of the solution to reducing youth tobacco use,” said Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, which coordinates KBD.

Every day, more than 4,000 kids try their first cigarettes; another 1,000 kids become addicted smokers, one-third of whom will die prematurely as a result.

TRU’s teen tobacco prevention activities are funded by a grant from the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund (HWTF) and coordinated locally by the Orange County Health Department. Orange County TRU has clubs at each of the five local high schools.
