Cansler to speak at Legislative Breakfast

Posted on April 15, 2010 by Staff

Lanier Cansler, N.C. Secretary of Health and Human Services, will deliver the keynote address at the 32nd Annual Legislative Breakfast on Saturday from 7:45 to 10:30 a.m. at the William and Ida Friday Center off N.C. 54.

The event will focus on the future of mental health services in North Carolina. The event is co-sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness Durham and Orange county chapters, the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Caramore Community Inc., Club Nova and Threshold. For more information, visit mhaorangeco.org or contact Lisa Hamill at 933-8941.

NC Medicaid, under Secretary Cansler, and as associated w/ the NC State Legislative Appropriations Committee suggestions (this week) has decided to expand its Medicaid Waiver to two other LME’s (they administer mental health services) in NC. Piedmont Behavioral Health (PBH) has been ‘subjected’ to a pilot project as associated w/ this Medicaid Waiver. I’d be interested in hearing from mental health care advocates or providers as to the success—or not—-of that pilot program. Best I can tell, the waiver (as NC DHHS has described) acts like a capitated HMO e.g., Kaiser and that lead me to write this story: LME’s to Get Meaner / Leaner Under Proposed Cost Cutting NC State Legislative Proposal: IT’S ALL ABOUT CAPITATION and that=Accelerated Human Suffering.
